OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Oklahoma United Methodist Circle of Care and Citizens Caring for Children may have two different missions, but they share common ground in serving Central Oklahoma’s foster children.

Today, there are nearly 10,000 children in state custody. Looming reductions in child welfare services stand to create a crisis for children in foster care.

“In the face of grave state budget cuts to child welfare programs, all Oklahomans must pull together to minimize the impact to foster children and foster families,” stated Don Batson, President and CEO at Circle of Care.

Circle of Care and Citizens Caring for Children are combining resources this year in their back-to-school efforts to provide more supplies to more foster children.

In addition to many other individuals and community groups, Methodist churches across Central Oklahoma will conduct supply drives. These supplies will benefit not only Circle of Care foster children, but also hundreds more served through Citizens Caring for Children’s Resource Center.

The agencies are seeking donations of specific basic supplies, such as backpacks, No. 2 pencil packs, wide-ruled notebook paper, crayons, and stick glue, just to name a few.

“Back-to-school time for a foster child often means a new school in an unfamiliar community, different rules and new faces,” said Lynne Roller, Executive Director of Citizens Caring for Children. “Providing school supplies and back-to-school clothing are two key ways caring individuals can support foster children through a time of considerable anxiety.”

The campaign to collect new school supplies will run from June 1 through June 30, 2017. Donations may be dropped off at Citizens Caring for Children, 730 W. Wilshire, Suite 112, Oklahoma City, OK, between 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mondaythrough Friday.
