Finishing the Race (2017 Essay Contest)

We invite high school athletes, and college age athletes from any college or university in Oklahoma, to participate in the 2017 Oklahoma United Methodist Circle of Care Essay Contest! The theme is “Finishing the Race” and it challenges each writer to reflect on a difficult time in their life where they felt they could not “Finish the Race.” Contest begins Wednesday, February 8, 2017. Essay with online application by 10 p.m. Sat., March 4.

Winners
There will be two winners selected from high school and two from college. Each winner will be awarded 2 VIP tickets to Circle of Care’s Friends of Children Banquet which includes a Celebrity Meet & Greet with Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Jackie is the winner of six Olympic Gold Medals and was named by Sports Illustrated as the “Greatest Female Athlete of the 20th Century”. She is the first woman to win back-to-back gold medals in the heptathlon and still holds the World Record in heptathlon.
Rules
Essays must be 300-400 words in length. All submissions must be received by 10 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2017 in order to be entered into the contest. Essays much be original and in no way duplicated.
Essay Description
“Finishing the Race” of life can be difficult and challenging. Many times the track of life can be unpredictable and full of obstacles. Describe a situation in your life where you felt stretched to the limit, and like you might not “make it”. How did you feel in that situation? How you were able to overcome the challenge. What happened to keep you going? What did you learn from the situation. How did it help you grow? How can your story benefit others? What do you hope to achieve in the future, and how did that difficult situation prepare you to reach your goals?
Judging
Judging begins immediately after the contest closes. Judges look for entries that best address the theme of the contest and meet all of the requirements. Winners will be contacted individually and announced in a press release published on Tuesday, March 28, 2017. All judges’ decisions are final.
