Subcontractor Parent Mentor

The Parent Mentor works to elevate parents’ voice and involvement to support local and state policy and system change. Successful subcontractors are passionate and committed individuals who are skilled in the areas of listening, providing guidance, and sharing hope with families in the child protective services (CPS) system. The ideal individual will possess a positive attitude, sincerity, and a willingness to help others. A Parent Mentor will have successfully exited the CPS system after having had their child(ren) placed in out of home care in order to relate to shared lived experience with parents engaged in the Parent to Parent Program. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Successfully complete the Building a Better Futures training
  • Successfully complete job shadow training
  • Complete a series of 11 trainings within the first year of employment
  • Contact the parent/family within one week of assignment
  • Maintain regular, face-to-face contact with the parent, with more contact in the beginning (1x/week)
  • Meet with ongoing CPS Social Worker and the family together as needed or requested by the family
  • Attend meetings with parents as needed as part of their case plan; examples include court hearings, school meetings, family team meetings, coordinated service teams, and/or meetings with other providers
  • Complete Parent to Parent Program paperwork and data collection requirements
  • Support parents in following their case plan and addressing safety concerns
  • Support and empower the parents to make changes, advocate for and communicate their needs, and help them find solutions and a pathway towards positive change.
  • Maintain healthy boundaries and relationships
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Participate as an integral part of the Parent to Parent team
  • Attend regularly scheduled supervision with the PTP Coordinator, PTP team meetings and some CPS unit meetings, and monthly reflective clinical support.
  • Be open in supervision about the challenges that come up in your work and your own journey towards health and wellbeing
  • Attend meetings and other community groups to serve as a key stakeholder in supporting and improving policy, practice and overall system change
  • Participate in local and state PTP Advisory Council meetings, as needed
  • Tell your story and share your experiences (as comfortable) to advocate for local and state shifts in perspective, values and attitudes about children, youth and adults served within the system
  • Assist in local and state policy, program and systems changes to further promote, support and sustain the integration of parent voice, participation and perspective by participating in meetings, committees, advisory councils and providing feedback on documents and training curriculum
  • Provide community outreach and education on the PTP program to build community support, awareness, and participation as needed
  • Perform other duties as needed

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Pass a thorough background check (including fingerprinting), Department of Transportation check, physical, and drug test as required by the Department of Human Services
  • Possess a valid Oklahoma driver’s license and a good driving record
  • Must be a parent who has had their children placed in out of home care and successfully completed all goals for reunification and has been reunited with their children for at least one year or has resolved all issues related to termination of their parental rights or other permanency decisions
